WILDCOAST to Hold Blue Carbon Forums in California and Mexico

Climate Change | Mangroves

On October 29 and 30, WILDCOAST is hosting two exciting forums on Blue Carbon and the role of wetland conservation as a natural climate solution. Blue Carbon is carbon that is stored and sequestered in coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows. WILDCOAST has been working to protect these special wetlands in California and Mexico for the many ecosystem services and important habitats they provide.

Now we are interested in how wetland conservation can be a natural solution to the impacts of climate change, specifically their role in trapping and storing atmospheric carbon.

The first of these events is open to the public and will take place in San Diego at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, from 2:15 – 4:00 pm on Monday, October 29, in Ekart Building Room 227. There, speakers from WILDCOAST, The Carbon Institute, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Griffith University in Australia, will lead a discussion on Blue Carbon and the cutting edge research and work that is going on to measure Blue Carbon and conserve coastal wetland ecosystems in California, Mexico and Australia. The conversation will conclude with a hosted happy hour nearby at the Surfside Lounge next to Caroline’s Cafe on the Scripps campus. Refreshments have been generously donated by Serpentine Cider. Scripps Institution of Oceanography is located at 8622 Kennel Way, La Jolla, CA 92037. For more information please contact Fay Crevoshay at fay@wildcoast.net

The following day on October 30, WILDCOAST is hosting the Blue Carbon Forum at the Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education (CICESE) in Ensenada. This will be a focused discussion on Blue Carbon as it relates to mangrove and seagrass conservation in Mexico, accreditation for carbon reduction projects, and WILDCOAST’s innovative work with Mexico’s National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) to protect mangroves and other Blue Carbon ecosystems.

The event is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday, October 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the main auditorium of CICESE, located on Tijuana-Ensenada Highway No. 3918, Zona Playitas District, Ensenada, Baja California. C.P. 22860. For more information please contact Tannia Fausto at Tannia@wildcoast.net

Both events provide incredible opportunities to dive into the topics of Blue Carbon and wetland conservation and lay the foundations for collaborative work at the international level for Blue Carbon ecosystem conservation.

WILDCOAST would like to thank its sponsors and supporters including Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation, Marisla Foundation, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Serpentine Cider, and individual donors like you for making these events possible.
