Batiquitos Lagoon is one of San Diego's 11 marine protected areas (MPAs), areas of the coast and ocean protected and managed to conserve the diversity and abundance of marine life, the habitats they depend on, and the integrity of marine ecosystems.

Batiquitos Lagoon is also one of the sites being restored as part of WILDCOAST's Blue Carbon Program. As part of this program WILDCOAST will be restoring over 42 acres of important blue carbon habitat adjacent to wetland MPAs in San Diego County. These restoration sites will sequester carbon and provide a natural tool to help fight climate change.
