IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. — After years of delays, the San Antonio de los Buenos wastewater treatment plant in Tijuana is finally operational, but beach closure signs remain firmly planted along Imperial Beach's shoreline.
The Mexican sewage treatment facility, located six miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border, broke down in 2020, leading to years of raw sewage flowing into the Pacific Ocean. Construction on repairs didn't begin until 2024, with completion deadlines repeatedly pushed back.
"This is one of the biggest national security threats on the United States-Mexico border," Serge Dedina, the Executive Director of Wild Coast and former Imperial Beach mayor, said. . .
